I’m delighted to let my readers know that my dear friend Martin Weiner, whom I call my “wine teacher,” is featured on a new Grape Radio podcast. Martin has been in the wine business since the early 60s, when he was California’s first independent wine broker, and for many years he has been doing wine seminars and fine wine dinners. The main subject of the podcast is wine appraisals, which Martin was one of the first to offer in the U.S., but given Martin’s broad experience, the show covers other ground as well.
This was the 40th anniversary wine lunch of my beloved Saturday wine lunch group in Los Angeles — a group that has been meeting now for 46 years for a wine tasting lunch every single Saturday. The group has been known to oenophiles in L.A. for many years, and has entertained celebrities and visiting wine dignitaries over the years, including Gloria Steinem, Baron Edmond Rothschild, Robert Mondavi, Janet Trefethen, Barney Fetzer, Don Chappelet, David Stare of Dry Creek, Waren Winiarski, and importers and wine writers such as Frank Schoonmaker, S. F. Hallgarten, Clive Coates, Alex Lichine, L.A. Times Restaurant editor Louis Dwan, and Robert Haas.
