2011 Wine Bloggers Conference: Sponsor Programming Heavy, Relevant Content Light

I may not be welcomed back to one of these things in the future after registering here my honest impression of this event. Realistically, though, I wouldn’t want to return if there’s not a major change in the way it’s structured, especially the total domination of the program by activities devoted to the event’s sponsors. But if one or more of us don’t speak up when the organizers go way overboard in selling off the vast majority of the program time to sponsors, what does that say about journalistic values in wine blogging? 2011 Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Tasting

Barolos, Brunellos and Barbarescos from 2004 and 2006, vintages I’ve already been very much enjoying, stood out for me at this tasting, as did Amarones from 2005 and 2006. I note that my list of those I rated the highest is dominated by the big wines, like Barolos and Amarones, which I suppose is to be expected. I therefore want to first mention some of the more unusual wines that I really liked, that didn’t quite merit 92 points in my mind, but that were excellent for their type. Those include a balanced and delicious rosé Franciacorta sparkling wine from Berlucchi Guido–the NV Cuvee Storica ’61; the best Italian Gewurztraminer I’ve tasted–the ’09 Elena Walch from Alto Adige; and a remarkably poised and classy Soave, the ’08 Prà Soave Classico Staforte.
